Chitwood in China

Dr. Randolph Chitwood, Jr. recently spoke to a group of medical professionals and experts from around the world at The 3rd Beijing International Symposium and Workshop on Robotic Cardiac Surgery (BISROCS). The conference provides an opportunity to share the latest information about robotic surgery and technology among professionals in the field.

Chitwood, director of the East Carolina Heart Institute, and a senior associate vice chancellor and professor of cardiovascular sciences at East Carolina University, was a guest of Changqing Gao, MD, who serves as the chief of cardiac surgery at PLA Military Hospital. The PLA hospital has more than 5,000 beds and is the largest hospital in China.

"Our international robotic cardiac surgery training center at East Carolina Heart Institute was instrumental in starting robotic cardiac surgery in China and the PLA Hospital in particular,” Chitwood said. “Dr. Wiley Nifong of the Brody School of Medicine and the Heart Institute proctored the first robotic cardiac operations there."

The Heart Institute Robotics Training Center is internationally recognized as a leading ambassador for promoting improved patient care in many countries. Chitwood is a pioneer in robot-assisted heart surgery, particularly mitral valve repair and replacement.
