Pediatric Cardiology

Physicians at the Cardiovascular Center perform about 100 pediatric open-heart procedures each year for all types of congenital defects. Pediatric patients are admitted to James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital. Minimally invasive techniques are used whenever possible. With the parents' approval, our surgeons can perform cardiopulmonary bypass procedures on infants as small as 3.3 pounds.

Our staff includes pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons and other pediatric subspecialists.

The Pediatric Cardiology Division provides services for children:

  • diagnosed with a congenital heart defect or heart murmur
  • requiring interventional cardiac catheterization
  • exhibiting symptoms of vasovagal syndrome (children who faint easily and experience chronic fatigue) or syncope
  • who complain of chest pain
  • with hypercholesterolemia
  • with irregular heart beats

Fetal Echocardiography

Pediatric cardiology services are also available to pregnant women requiring fetal echocardiography.

The prenatal cardiology program available through our Cardiovascular Center is one of the busiest in the United States. Since it began in 1988, the program has grown rapidly and now performs about 300 studies a year. Using this extraordinary technology, life-threatening forms of congenital disorders can be diagnosed as early as 16-17 weeks of gestation. Congenital heart disease and rhythm disturbances can be detected and, in some cases, treated before birth.

This procedure can give expectant parents and their physicians the knowledge they need to prepare for an infant with a specific cardiac problem. In many cases, we can give parents the peace of mind that comes with knowing that their unborn child is healthy.

Pediatric Surgery

In addition to almost 1,000 adult cardiac surgeries, Cardiovascular Center surgeons perform an average of 100 pediatric cardiac surgeries each year to correct congenital defects. At least 8 of every 1,000 infants born annually have heart defects. Many defects can be detected and even treated before birth, and early detection helps to improve long-term outcomes as well.

At the Cardiovascular Center, we have developed a highly skilled team dedicated exclusively to pediatric congenital heart surgery and treatment. The Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgery team includes pediatric cardiovascular surgeons, pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatric surgical nurses and technicians and intensive care physicians and nurses.
